Leaving Pigment Print on Vellum with hand applied gold leaf Arthur P. Haas Purchase Award from Wisconsin Photography, 2018
Get the Picture: The Arthur P. Haas Wisconsin Photography Collection
August 23 - November 16, 2019
Since 1979, the Racine Art Museum has hosted the ongoing juried photography competition, Wisconsin Photography. Over the last four decades, these exhibitions at RAM’s Wustum Museum of Fine Arts have showcased the state’s photographers working with a wide range of subjects and in a variety of styles. These shows have provided a pool of high-quality work from which the museum has been able to grow its holdings of regional photography.
Arthur P. Haas (1930 – 1982) was a Racine native and an award-winning photographer who spent a lifetime visually chronicling life in Racine in his role as staff photographer for The Journal Times, the city’s daily paper. In addition to his own work, Haas served as a mentor and informal teacher to many younger, area photographers. Upon his death in 1982, a Memorial Purchase Fund–-established by his sister Dorothy Haas with gifts from family and friends–-was established. These monies allow RAM to further support regional photographers by acquiring works from Wisconsin Photography each year for the museum’s permanent collection.
The 40 works shown here are just a sample of over 100 pieces that RAM has been able to acquire since the exhibition’s inception.

River of Grandmothers, Cyanotype on Silk with image transfers , 4feet by 21feet

Celena Richardson, one of the grandmothers featured in the inatallation piece.
Water brings together an exceptional group of contemporary artists whose work is inspired by the expressive possibilities of water. This exhibition, located in a region rich with fresh water, aims to bring attention to this valuable, yet vulnerable, resource through the lens of fiber- and video-based works, sculpture, and installation.
The work in Water addresses issues of conservation and climate change while embracing water’s evocative qualities and formal beauty. Many of the artists created new work for the exhibition and include top nationally recognized fiber artists (three have work in the Smithsonian’s collection), a multimedia artist, and a sculptor.
Wisconsin artists Heidi Parkes and Nirmal Raja draw us close to home through their sensitive observations of Lake Michigan. Parkes’s contemplative quilts evoke the lake’s deep shades and color palette, and Raja’s video stitches the water’s surface and horizon line. The undulations and abstractions of water also inspire the work of shibori artists Frank Connet and Mary Mendla, paper artist Jennifer Davies, and quilters Sarah Nishiura and Sarah J. Lauzon. While Vicki Reed made a new installation using cyanotype, a photographic process on treated fabric, that interprets water as a metaphor for understanding our maternal history.
The artists featured in the exhibition include Terese Agnew (WI), Frank Connet (IL), Jennifer Davies (CT), Susan Falkman (WI), Akiko Ike (Japan), Nnenna Okore (IL), Karyl Sisson (CA), Sarah J. Lauzon (FL), Mary Mendla (WI), Sarah Nishiura (IL), Heidi Parkes (WI), Nirmal Raja (WI), and Vicki Reed (WI).

Photographs are thought to immortalize events and loved ones. They provide a tangible keepsake for when our own memories or physical bodies eventually fade from this world. The exhibited images deal with concepts of memory, life, and death through the use of time honored alternative photographic methods that were invented in the mid-1800s.
Opening Reception on Friday, June 7,2019. 5-8pm
The show includes work by Amirmasoud Agharebparast, Jaime Aelavanthara, Ellie Cooper and Rachel Philips as well as by Vicki.

Mystery Path (Lion's Den Gorge Nature Preserve) Archival Print on Vellum with applied white gold leaf

Fall on the Creek (Cedar Pond, Cedarburg, WI ) Archival Print on Vellum with applied yellow gold leaf
The exhibit will feature the work of four artists who live on Columbia Rd in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, Patick Doughman, Bruce Hustad, Tom Kubala, and Vicki Reed. Vicki's eleven archival prints on vellum with applied gold leaf will feature two of her favorite places, Lion’s Den Gorge Nature Preserve and Cedar Creek. Though she has lived close to them and photographed them for 30 years, they never cease to inspire her.
"Two of my images in the exhibit are of landscapes that no longer exist. Recently the EPA oversaw a clean up of Columbia Pond (part of Cedar Creek) that was tainted with PCBs. The pond was dredged and topsoil on frequently flood areas was removed as well as many of the trees on the shoreline. The park has been redesigned with a new landscape and I look forward to it being reopened so I can discover new views. Though I mourn the loss of favorite trees I came to think of as friends, I appreciate the fact that the creek and pond will be healthy once again. "

Feed Mill-Pigment Print on Vellum with applied White Gold Leaf
Historic Cedarburg, Then and Now: In honor of the 120-year anniversary of the Wittenburg-Jochem mansion that houses the Cedarburg Art Museum, this exhibition seeks to commemorate aspects of our city’s well-preserved past that find meaningful, new uses in the 21st century. Nineteenth century limestone mills, retail buildings, and homes as well as other historic landmarks are not relics but buildings repurposed with new uses. Artists are invited to interpret historic and/or present-day aspects of the city that reveal earlier times or a vibrant, contemporary community.
